Will he get his mojo back?
No secret that lately I’ve been unable to find that groove all photographers look for. I do find photos, and they’re nice enough, and isn’t that nice. But there isn’t any pizzazz, no panache, no hot stuff.
A Real Fall Sky
At this time of year, when nature is in the midst of seduction by changing her sartorial presentation right before our eyes, we can often be so mesmerized by the transformation taking place in the trees and vegetation that we might miss the lovely, enchanting show she puts on for us in the sky.
Red Barn & Serendipity
Serendipity. I speak often about the value of patience, waiting for Mother Nature to give you what you seek. But another side of this wonderful photography journey is the opposite: simply taking what Mother Nature presents to you unexpectedly.
Fickle Light
Light. It's important. People can be enlightened, their spirits brighten, they become light-hearted, and in the Age of Aquarius, we let the sunshine in. Light gives us rainbows. Light is what cameras capture, and what nature photographers are constantly seeking.
Mist Over Still Pond
This photo was taken a few years ago, at a place only about fifteen miles from my home. It has been one of my more popular photos, appearing on tote bags, notepads, and prints, and garnering many comments. But yesterday, I drove to the site, and saw that it's gone. Obviously, the place itself is still there, but the scene is unrecognizable. The trees have been damaged by wind and time, fallen over, broken, and anyone who saw it today would not be able to tell it was the spot where this photograph was made.
Fallen But Not Finished
In the woods, among large trees, the trail takes a turn, and in late afternoon the dappled light reveals a fallen giant. With massive limbs supporting the broken trunk, holding it high above the ground, it appears to be struggling to get back up, as if too proud to simply collapse to the floor.
The F-stops Here
For beginners, one of the more slippery concepts in photography is the f-stop. What the heck is it, why are the numbers so weird, why do they seemingly run backward, what’s it do, and what should you set yours to?
Endeavor To Persevere
I knew they were there. I’d seen them out there before. It’s home for them, the kind of habitat they love: woody marshland, with lots of places to hide. But time and again when I’d go out there to shoot them, they were elusive, like an acquaintance who owes you money.
Lucky shot!
On a weekend photo shoot & camping trip, I was talking with my camp neighbors, who saw me lurking along the bank of the river, shooting birds. They asked about my photos, and of course I was happy to show them some of my favorites from a previous outing. Looking through shots on my phone, they made appropriate complimentary noises, and then came to one shot of a great blue heron with a fish in its mouth. “Oh,” the wife said. “How lucky that you happened to be there at just the right time, and with a camera!”
