Out Like A Lion

Bad weather is good for photography, so on a blustery April Fool’s Day, with heavy clouds and rain showers, I just had to get out to capture the interesting light. It was quite cold, and the wind was brutal, which made it feel even colder. But oh, that lovely, stormy sky! I dressed for the weather, and the beauty of nature helped me ignore the frigid wind in my face. Though I was also kept busy wiping water from the lens as I worked, the real challenge was to avoid getting blown around by the gusts, which kept threatening to knock me off my feet.

Out Like A Lion – Killbuck Marsh, Ohio

18-300mm lens at 18mm, hand held, 1/800” @ f/8, ISO-250(auto), -0.7EV

I needed a fast shutter speed because of the ferocious wind, which not only made the grasses move a lot, but also made me a little unsteady. The composition intentionally gives equal space to the marsh and the sky, as they seemed to me to have equal visual importance. I just love the light that often accompanies stormy weather!
